npused showing negative values

Hi all, can someone explain what's the use of the "npused" field in the systables. I think it has to do with cost optimizing because UPDATE STATISTICS allways changed the values in this field. But i think that there is a bug somewhere because nearly all npused fields in our database are negative values (Online V5.0B00 on a Siemens RM400). This may be a reason for the poor performance of some queries which are using no index or the wrong index. Is there any way to calculate the npused field from the other infos on systables?
