best practice installing 4gl and csdk

We are performing a minor upgrade of the engine from fc2 to fc8. In the process we have a newer cdsk and the TFM refers cryptically to optionally installing in separate directories. I am unsure if this means a complete path difference or just that the esql and tools and 4gl directories are their own dir. In the past 7x we installed all products into the $INFORMIXDIR and db path. /dbms/informix engine et al csdk and 4gl have informixdir of /dbms/informix and create their own lib paths /dbms/informix/lib/esql /dbms/informix/lib/4gl Is this best practice when using IDS 9.4FC8, CSDK 2.81, c4gl 7.32hc2 and esqlc of 9.53hc2? If not, what would the recommendation be for installation order and paths? We followed the rule of TEN and set $INFORMIXDIR as /dbms/informix. Thanks in advance.

The note about installing in separate directories is only 'required' if you want to support multiple versions of CSDK and/or C4GL or 32bit and 64bit versions concurrently. Otherwise there is no reason why you cannot keep them all in the same INFORMIXDIR. > Is this best practice when using IDS 9.4FC8, CSDK 2.81, c4gl 7.32hc2 and esqlc > of 9.53hc2? > > If not, what would the recommendation be for installation order and paths? The latest install scripts and changes in the naming and locations of libraries and message files have officially made it unneccessary, but most of us continue to follow it as 'prudent'.
