SCO 5.0.5 and Online 7.3 don't seem to be too stable
Posted in 1999
Gary Quiring reported IDS 7.30.UC2 on SCO OpenServer 5.0.5 crashing 3-10 times a day with "Assert Failed: No Exception Handler" (mtex.c line 314, MT_EX_OS exception) and asked whether SCO was a suitable platform. Art Kagel said SCO is fine and suggested checking kernel parameters (shared memory/semaphores) from the release notes; another poster advised editing stune/mtune and relinking the kernel rather than using scoadmin. A poster with the same assert said to check the af.* file for the offending SQL, and that Informix support advised dropping/recreating the table, dropping distributions and rerunning update statistics, which appeared to fix it. No confirmed resolution for the original poster is recorded.

We bought a system written in Informix using OnLine 7.3UC2. The engine
keeps going down with messages like below:
11:58:07 Assert Failed: No Exception Handler
11:58:07 Informix Dynamic Server Version 7.30.UC2
11:58:07 Who: Session(883, billz@emco1, 15062, 0)
Thread(987, sqlexec, 0, 1)
File: mtex.c Line: 314
11:58:07 Results: Exception Caught. Type: MT_EX_OS, Context: mem
11:58:07 Action: Please notify Informix Technical Support.
11:58:11 See Also: /tmp/af.3db7a0f
11:58:11 mtex.c, line 314, thread 987, proc id 541, No Exception Handler.
11:58:11 PANIC: Attempting to bring system down
Is SCO a reasonable platform for Informix? When we go live we will have
around 175 users on our 4way XEON server with 4 gig of memory. Our
business is distribution with around 3000 orders per day.
I'm just wondering if there's a more stable platform that we should
consider?
Gary Quiring
If this is a new installation and has never been online long I suggest you
read the release notes ($INFORMIXDIR/release/en_us/0333/IDS_7.3) for notes
about OS kernel parameter you need to set to permit the engine to create
sufficient shared memory and semaphores.
That box should certainly handle the load and SCO is a fine OS. Sure there are
other bigger, faster, slightly more stable platforms but you will not go wrong
with the current plan.

It's just that we have only around 10 people using this system presently and the engine goes down 3-10 times a day. Right now just the financials are live, but when the distribution side go up, it does not look very robust. I heard the Informix 7 required UnixWare to operate correctly ?????? dunno
if its true
( Imean UnixWare out of SCO family, I don't mean Ifx won't work with any
other OS )

What tools did you use to tune the kernel parameters? Do not use the
scoadmin/admin. Direct modify the config file would be a nice method.
log in as root,
# cd /etc/*/cf.d # thers's some many directory level.
# vi stune mtune # for detail format of this two file, use man command.
...
# cd ../bin# idbuild # relink kernel
# reboot

Hmmmm. Looks kinda familiar. We had a similar message last week, viz

Have you looked in the file /tmp/af.3db7a0f for the "Current SQL"
statement that may be causing the problem. Were you by any chance doing
an "update statistics" at the time ? We were advised by our local
Informix Tech Support to drop the offending table, the distributions,
recreate the table, rerun update stats. All of the above *appear* to
have cured the problem on our TEST instance and I am this evening
applying the same to our LIVE instance.
