IDS Minimum Requirements?
Posted in 1999
We are currently upgrading from Informix SE Ver. 5.01 to IDS Ver. 7.30 Workgroup Ed.. Before we started on our production machine (RISC 6000 59H, 1 gig mem., AIX 4.3) we first decided to upgrade our development machine (RISC Power Server 350, 32 meg mem., AIX 4.3) to recompile the programs and make sure everything works ok. The problem is that the IDS is extremely slow on the development box. A simple program with two loops performing 1000 inserts then 1000 updates takes over 2 minutes on the new IDS, where as it takes 17 seconds on the old SE. So we called Informix fishing for information they told us to upgrade the memory so we did, going to 64 meg., exact same results on both versions. When I talked to Informix I also told them about the cpu statistics I monitored using vmstat. When I run the test program on the IDS server the cpu averages 98 user 2 sys., with SE version it averages around 60 user 25 sys. As you can imagine with that much cpu resources going to IDS it just kills the system and all other processes really drag. The guy I talked to at Informix really didn't give me any minimum requirements, and he seemed to think that it should run fine on the 350. So my question is, is he correct? Or is this like trying to run Windows 98 on a 486 with 4 meg mem.? Any responses will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jay
