For security reasons, the Informix server should be on a different box than the web server. Whether it should be another NT box or a UNIX box depends on how important ($$$) performance and stability are. IMHO, if you're concerned with performance and stability, use a UNIX box as the data server. It can support multi-processing (NT/Informix can't), and UNIX tends to be more stable than NT. But UNIX also costs a helluva lot more, so you have to weigh that into the equation. As for HP vs. Solaris, if you can influence the decision, I'd lean toward Solaris, simply because it's Informix's primary platform (i.e., they typically develop for Solaris and then port to the other OSes later), and because Sun tends to outperform HP.
