Advice on dropping New Era for Batch Work

We are interested in moving our batch work over from New Era (for Motif) to a more stable programming language. Amazingly, an application made with New Era can crash the database. What does everyone use to run batch work? We have a copy of ESQL, and were wondering if 4GL might be better. Any advice? ...Michael...
