This is a MS-Windows API that allows vendor-independent database access from ODBC-aware Windows applications, e.g. Excel 5.0, Word 6.0, Access 2.0 etc. You need an ODBC-driver for the DBMS you want to access and the appropriate DBMS-networking software if you are accessing the DBMS over a network. For Informix, there are several possibilities. There is a product called SQL Retriever from Visionware which contains everything you need, but is only available for certain platforms. The "generic" way to access Informix databases via ODBC is to have the Informix ODBC driver (made by Intersolv, former Q+E) and I-Net/PC on the PC side and I-Net/I-Star on the DBMS server side. Of course, you also need the networking software on both machines; I-Net/PC 5.01 runs on top of Winsock, which makes things easier. If you have further questions, feel free to email me.
