INFORMIX ANNOUNCES WORKGROUP SERVER STRATEGY New INFORMIX-OnLine Workgroup Server Will Combine Ease-of-Use Features with the Performance and Scalability of Informix's Dynamic Scalable Architecture* OnLine Workgroup Server to Complement INFORMIX-SE Database Server Menlo Park, Calif., (May 1, 1995) -- Informix Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:IFMX), the leader in parallel processing database technology, today announced plans for a new workgroup server product targeted at departmental and workgroup environmentsof 2 to 32 users. The product, to be called INFORMIX-OnLine Workgroup Server, will combine new ease-of-use features for installation, deployment and database administration with the performance and scalability of Informix's Dynamic Scalable Architecture (DSA). DSA is the foundation of INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server, which is currently available on a wide variety of computing platforms. The new workgroup server will provide Informix customers with a database productthat is not only easy to use and administer, but will also provide the functionality and robustness to perform more sophisticated database operations. OnLine Workgroup Server is planned to be initially available in Q4 1995 on Microsoft Windows NT, with SCO UNIX and Novell UNIXWARE versions planned to follow in the first half of 1996. "Workgroup environments are an integral part of enterprise IT solutions and it's clear that there will be a need for more robust workgroup server products,"said Phil White, CEO and chairman of Informix. "OnLine Workgroup Server brings the power of our parallel processing architecture to the workgroup where we expect to see many more multiprocessing computers being used in the not too distant future." "Informix's strategy for meeting the future demands of workgroup and enterprise computing is in line with the needs of the marketplace," said David L. House, senior vice president of Intel Corporation. "Companies will want to use Pentium processor-based multiprocessing systems as workgroup servers, due to the unprecedented scalability, performance and price-performance that these systems provide. The combination of Intel Architecture-based scalable systems and Informix's OnLine Workgroup Server will make it easier for companies to deploy and administer companywide, cutting-edge business solutions." OnLine Workgroup Server Overview "INFORMIX-SE has satisfied traditional workgroup computing requirements for a smaller footprint, easily deployable database server, and it will continue to be a very attractive workgroup server option for traditional workgroup environments," said Steve Sommer, vice president of marketing, Informix. "However, today's new workgroup environment requires more business-critical applications being deployed on uni- and multiprocessor platforms, more robust levels of functionality including support for multimedia data types, improved processing performance, scalability, and high system availability. OnLine Workgroup Server was specifically designed for these new workgroup environments." The product will offer advanced functionality including stored procedures, triggers, and a true multithreaded architecture. Multimedia capabilities, including the storage and retrieval of data, images, audio, and video will allow users to develop and deploy next-generation applications that utilize a variety of these data types. OnLine Workgroup Server's underlying architecture, DSA, is proven for both uniprocessor and multiprocessor performance. Users will be able to easily upgrade to the OnLine Dynamic Server product with Parallel Data Query (PDQ) or replication capabilities, as well as the scalability provided by large multiprocessing environments, without rewriting their applications. Users of OnLine Workgroup Server will be able to take advantage of applications from over 5,000 existing Informix VARs, or develop applications themselves with INFORMIX-NewEra; other tools such as INFORMIX-4GL, INFORMIX-ESQLC, or INFORMIX-ESQL COBOL; or a wide range of third-party tools. Pricing and Availability Pricing will be announced when OnLine Workgroup Server becomes available on NT in Q4, 1995. SCO UNIX and UNIXWARE versions are currently planned for the first half of 1996. OnLine Workgroup Server and its new graphical administration tool will be demonstrated at Informix's Worldwide Users Conference in July at the San Jose Convention Center in California.
