Problem of restore
Posted in 2009
A user on AIX 6.1 with IDS 10.00.FC10X1 got "read: I/O error ... 22+0 records in/out, Physical restore failed - function read archive backup failed code 1" when running ontape -p against a remote tape drive (TAPEDIR set to host:/dev/rmt/0). Art Kagel and Martin Fuerderer explained that ontape reads the first 22 pages, closes the device, restarts the engine in recovery mode, then reopens the tape expecting to start from the beginning again — so a no-rewind (or auto-ejecting) device fails exactly this way; an auto-rewind device is required. The user reported that piping the tape through rsh/dd into "ontape -p -t STDIO" restored successfully.

Hi
I have problems with my engine Informix restore.
If raalizo restore with the command:
$ ontape -p
Show me the following error message:
read: I/O error
22+0 records in
22+0 records out
Physical restore failed - function read archive backup failed code 1 errno 0
Thanks for the help

Can you see the TAPEDIR file/device? What are its permissions?

Not clear. Is the /dev/rmt/0 device local to the machine on which you are
performing the restore or is it remote? If local, then you should have
TAPEDIR set to simply /dev/rmt/0 without the IP address.
Can you read the tape manually on it's host with dd? What happens? Is it
possible that the tape unit is ejecting the tape when ontape closes the
device? Ontape reads the first 22 pages from the tape to get the reserved
pages restored, then it closes the tape device/file and starts the IDS
instance in recovery mode (oninit -r). Once the engine is up in recovery
mode, ontape reopens the tape device/file and expects to reread the first
page (that's why you need to use an auto rewind capable device). If the
tape unit ejects the tape when ontape closes the file the first time one
would expect to see the exact results you are seeing here.

Hi,
the problem may be that the tape (device) you are
using for the restore does not act as a rewind device.
ontape first reads some pages to determine what is
to be restored. Then it closes the tape device and
opens it again, expecting that it will start again from
the beginning. If the device acts as a no-rewind
device, then upon the second opening of the
device it will not start from the beginning.
This is what Art also explained already, and it
really works like that!
Regards,
Martin
