How to use Informix Dynamic Server
Posted in 2008
A newcomer (an ASP.NET/SQL Server developer) installed the IDS 11.5 Developer Edition trial on Windows and asked how to use it, unsure whether IDS connects to an IBM server or to local SQL Server/Access data, where to create a database, and whether there's an equivalent of SQL Server Management Studio. After some snarky "read the manual" replies, helpful answers explained that IDS is itself the local database server, databases are created inside the instance, and tools such as dbaccess and the Open Admin Tool (OAT) can be used for creating tables and running queries, with links to the IBM Info Center documentation and a developerWorks tutorial.

Hi Giri, I am basically a asp.net2.0(sqlserver2005) programmer. I have installed IDS but do not know how to use and i have got some doubts also i am listing below: 1. Whether IDS trial version connects to IBM server or it connects our local databases. If it connects to local machine means tell me whether it connects to sqlserver databases or access or which backend databases. 2. Using IBM Informix Dynamic Server 11.5 - Server instance manager i have created a connection, but i do not know where to create the database. 3. Can you understand my problem my direct question is, like sql server management studio in sqlserver2005 whether IBM IDS trial version provides any place for playing table creation, query running etc., Bye Bindu

IDS does not connect to SQLServer unless you specifically jump through hoops to set it up. IDS is used instead of SQL Server. It is a backend database. > 2. IDS is the local database server.

Run the dbaccess tool. That's how you create databases, tables, etc. and
can query the data, etc.

Dbaccess, Open Admin Tool (OAT).
