From memory, it sounds like you have your HP set up as a trusted system? A quick check of /etc/passwd would tell. If you have encrypted passwords in /etc/passwd then you aren't set up as a trusted system. So assuming that you are set up as a trusted system, it could be concievable that under SAM, your adminsitrator said all the machines on the same lan segment were trusted. I am of course assuming that all the connecting PCs were on the same class C netblock and your mask is FF FF FF 00 ? -Just a hunch Mikey.
