See TFM: INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server Administrator's Guide, Vol 1 Version 7.1 Chapter 14, "Table-location Guidelines" which points you to INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server Performance Guide Chapter 3, "Table Placement, Layout, and Fragmentation" Carlton Doe's book has an entire sub-chapter on calculating extent sizes. He is a little clearer on planning than TFM. You could certainly use a copy. INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server Handbook ISBN 0-13-605296-7 1997, Prentice Hall Some of the Informix training staff scrutinized it, and found just one mistake in nearly 500 pages of text. (See his web site for the errata: http://www.xmission.com:80/~dbaresrc/book_errors.html .) You will find several extent size calculators at the IIUG site at http://www.iiug.org , most of which use the calculation from the Performance Guide. It sounds like you could benefit from the Informix courses on System Administration and Performance Tuning. They are pretty good courses, IMHO. Be sure to factor in realistic growth estimates for the table. We had a lively discussion the other night at a user group meeting (you *are* a member, aren't you?) on the responsibility of Informix for providing tools to administer databases that the DBA improperly configured. "Good on ya" for asking. It shows that you are taking on the responsibility. ___________________________________________________________ Clem Akins (aka clem@informix.com) <- NEW ACCOUNT!
