Actually, you are downloading to the terminal, not to standard output.
The fact that the standard output of the user shell is usually the
terminal leds to confusion.
Using /dev/tty you can see the output on screen but can't do things
like:
echo "unload to /dev/tty select ..." | dbaccess database | awk -F '|' '{
...}'
