Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.

If I'm not bad
select ''
into ls_str
from some_table
Assigns a null value to the string variable ls_str.
In 7.32 it asigns an empty string but not a null string.
SO if you explicitly need to assign a null value to the string you need to something like:
select null::char(5) -- Casting
into ls_str
from some_table
It will efectively asigns null to ls_str.

Subject: Re: Upgrade gotchas?
After an upgrade from 4GL 7.20 to 7.31.FC1., we found that NULLs are
handled differently on cursors (Sorry I don't remember the exact
problem). We confirmed the same results on the 32 bit 7.31.UC1 version
too. IBM tech support told us that the 7.20 tools were not handling
NULLs corrcetly, and were allowing our sloppy code to work. But not
any more :( We ended up changing the SQL where we had problems to be
more specific on handling the NULLs.
