RSS INSTALLATION
Posted in 2016
A user on Informix 11.70 / Windows 2008 R2 couldn't get a Remote Standalone Secondary (RSS) built for offloading reporting. Art Kagel gave both routes: the manual one (add server to sqlhosts, copy/edit sqlhosts and ONCONFIG with new DBSERVERNAME/DBSERVERALIASES, create chunks, ontape -s -L 0 on primary, ontape -p physical restore on the secondary, then 'onmode -d RSS <primary>'), or simply use ifxclone. The user's instance failed to start with a DBSERVERALIASES entry (likely no matching registry/sqlhosts entry) and he dropped it; RSS then worked. Art also said RSS adds no noticeable load on the primary, and corrected the final error by noting the secondary needs 'onmode -d RSS <primary name>', not 'onmode -d <primary>'.

Hi, I want to install an RSS standlaone server on Windows, But I have followed the steps but no way to create this replica, I want to isolate the reporting to this server and to dedicte the primary server only for transaction. Os : Windows 2008 R2 and Informix 11.70
Creating an RSS secondary is trivial. To do it manually, first add the new
server to the sqlhosts file, then copy the sqlhosts and ONCONFIG files,
modify the DBSERVERNAME and DBSERVERALIASES entries in the copy of the
ONCONFIG file, create the chunk files, then archive the primary using
ontape -s -L 0, perform a physical only restore to create the secondaryusing ontape -p, once the restore completes run
onmode -d RSS <primary name>
Done.
Or even easier use ifxclone to create the secondary directly from the
primary. On the secondary run:
ifxclone --source=<primary name> --sourceIP=<primary IP address>
--sourcePort=<primary port #>
--target=<rss name> --targetIP=<rss IP address>
--targetPort=<rss port #>
--disposition=RSS --createchunkfile
Ifxclone will take care of everything, even creating the chunks and copying
and editing the sqlhosts and onconfig files.

Wat should I put on dbservername and dbserveralias ?
Whatever you want! DBSERVERNAME would be the basename of the secondary. DBSERVERALIASES would contain any additional names for the server. Typically if the primary is named fred a sighr might call the RSS secondary fred_rss. But it's up to you. Hi, Do you have an entry in Registry(sqlhosts) about your chosen DBSERVERALIAS name? 2016-06-21 11:28 GMT+03:00 CHALLENGER212 ABDERRAFI <abderrafi212@gmail.com>: > I have put the dbservername and dbservealis but my instances refused to > start, > when I remove dbserveralias, my instances has started, also I was able to > confugure the RSS secondary and primary server and its working fine, plz > why > configuring dbserveralias block the strating of the instance? > > > > ******************************************************************************* > Forum Note: Use "Reply" to post a response in the discussion forum. > > --94eb2c114246e651050535c5f04c

Hi, anyway it works without dbserveralias, but is RSS can impact transactions performance or can cause any issues for a production environment with 4000 connections?
There should not be any noticeable impact on the primary, no. Art Art S. ok, thank you
Hi, I have choose to work with ifxclone to mount an RSS server on a large
archive database, but it did not work, in deed the clone has happened
correctly I have duplicate the database with the ifxclone utility and on than
the primary I runed:
onmode -d add RSS sec_server
and on the secondary in wich I have runed ifxclone I runned
onmode -d Prim_server but I have only thiserror"This command is not valid on this server. Check the syntax of the command
and whether it is being run on the appropriate type of high availability
server (primary or secondary)."
My informix is 11.70 C5 and the ifxclone in this version does not give the
option to create chunks and to start directely an RSS server.
thanks to help plz
On the secondary, to establish it as RSS, you need to do:
onmode -d RSS <primary name>
