try this..
create a script called backup.sh with your ontape command
ex:
#!/bin/ksh
export ONCONFIG=
export INFORMIXSERVER=
export INFORMIXDIR=
/usr/informix/bin/onmode -uy ** quiescent mode
sleep 4
/usr/informix/bin/ontape -s -L 0
/usr/informix/bin/onmode -m
and then run another script called backup2.sh against it like this.
/admin/backup2.sh <<!
!
that should put the carriage returns in to answer the prompt
