IDS 940 64-Bit / 32-Bit conversion question
Posted in 2008
Elena wanted to temporarily run IDS 9.40 32-bit on a Solaris 10 box already running a 64-bit 9.40 instance, reusing the same chunks/dbspaces, so she could restore a 32-bit production archive, then return to 64-bit. Advice: no version downgrade path is needed — install the 32-bit binaries under a separate INFORMIXDIR, copy ONCONFIG/sqlhosts, shut down the 64-bit engine and start the 32-bit one. Her ontape L0 backup errors were sidestepped: Art said to just restore the 32-bit archive with the 32-bit engine offline, then later restore the saved 64-bit archive, provided both machines share the same architecture. David suggested checking release notes for a conversion script (needed on AIX) and testing 32-bit compatibility with a scratch instance. No confirmation of the final outcome is recorded.

Hello All, I have a question concerning an IDS server conversion between 64-bit and 32-bit: Now I have installed an IDS 9.40 FC7 on a SOLARIS 10 box and it is working fine. I want to install an IDS 9.40 32-Bit on the same machine and I want to keep the existing server configuration (chucks, dbspaces, databases...). So I want to convert my server from 64-Bit to 32-Bit. My question is the following: is it possible to perform this conversion directly : 64-Bit <--> 32-Bit or I have to perform the following way: 1) *IDS 9.40 64-Bit* --> IDS 9.3 (32-Bit or 64-Bit) 2) IDS 9.3 (32-Bit or 64-Bit) --> *IDS 9.40 32-Bit *Thank you for your help, Elena* *
Hi, I would check the release notes in the 64-bit $INFORMIXDIR/release/*/*. I know it was possible under AIX Unix. Informix provided a script that would convert some of the entries in the system tables to recognise the instance as 32-bit. You would run the conversion script, take down the instance and then point the instance to the 32-bit binaries and bring up the instance as 32-bit assuming your 64-bit O/S will run 32-bit software properly. In AIX 5 it was just a matter of re-linking a sym-link to switch between 32/64 bit O/S. Converting to 64-bit instance is just a matter of shutting down your 32-bit instance and pointing to the 64-bit Informix binaries. Repeat as above to go back to 32-bit and so on. The 64bit instance should be performing a bit faster than 32bit was, and you have more flexibility for tuning - larger buffer cache, etc. -- Art S. I came back with a new questions on the same subject.
It is not a 'downgrade to 32bit' : I need for 32bit for short time and
after I will finish I want to come back on 64bit.
In fact I need to restore a database from production into a test server.
In production server I have an IDS 940 UC2.
On the test server I have an IDS 940 FC7 (with SOLARIS 10). Due to a
lack of machines I have to restore the server backup in 32bit format
over a server in 64bit. For the 32bit version I have not disk space to
make its own server configuration . I want to use the same disk spaces
as were used for 64bit server.
Now I have installed the IDS 940 UC2 into a different directory than
it was used for IDS 940 FC7.
I have configured the new environment (INFORMIXDIR, ONCONFIG, SQLHOSTS)
for 32bit
and I'm able to start the 32bit server. My server in 32bit it is ONLINE
but_ I think that the conversion does not complete._
In the online.log file I did not found any conversion errors , even the
message like 'Conversion completed successfully' it is not present there.
I performed the oncheck commands as are detailed into the doc (Migrating
to Dynamic Server 9.40 or 9.30 from 9.x, 7.3x, or 7.24) and no errors
were reported there.
When I try to make the L0 backup of the 32bit server it does not work:
- if the server it is ONLINE and I start the "ontape -s -L 0" - the
server crashes and I receive the error:
/"Archive failed - buc_fe.c : Archive API processing failed at line 236
for msgtype"
/- if the server it is OFFLINE and I start the "ontape -s -L 0" - the
backup stops and I receive the error:
/"Server is in an incompatible state or user authentication failed."
/Please let me know what I did wrong.
For me now this backup L0 it is not important because I do not need for
it. I need to restore over it a different backup in 32bit format.
Later, when I will finish with it I want to restore over it the backup
of 64bit server ( I made it before stating the server conversion) and I
want to start the
64bit server. It will work?
Thank you for your help,
Elena

Hi,
so you are trying to bring up your dev 64-bit Infx instance using 32-bit Infx
binaries - correct?
There may be compatability issues here i.e. your 32-bit Infx binaries might
not be compatible on your 64-bit O/S and for this reason you are getting the
errors. Is your production O/S the same as your dev environment?
I would create a test 32-bit Informix instance on your dev box rather than
trying to bring up the 64-bit instance with 32-bit binaries and see if that
works ok. Just create a new Infx instance with a rootdbs and see if that comes
online ok. You could back up and restore using ontape as a test.
There will be no conversion process shown in the online log going from 64-bit
to 32-bit. Did you check the release notes for any conversion script when
migrating from 64-bit to 32-bit instance? As mentioned before this was needed
when going from 64-->32bit on AIX not sure on SUN O/S.
Hope this helps

Yes, what you want to do will work fine as long as the production and test
machines are the same architecture (ie both Sparc or both Intel, etc.).
Shutdown the 32bit instance and use its ontape/onbar to restore the 32bit
archive. Bring the engine online and do what you need to do. Then you can
shut it down and either convert it to 64bit using the 64bit version or
restore the original 64bit database from its archive.

Hi,
I was suggesting doing a quick test to prove 32-bit compatibility on your O/S
as you were getting errors when trying to bring the instance up that was
already on there. However, if the O/S is the same as live then can't see any
problems in doing a restore, bring it online and change to 64-bit when ever
your ready. I usually create a simple test instance before creating a whole
environment as this can take a long time to build i.e. getting the necessary
disk, fire-wall access to the live backup-server, etc.. and then find things
weren't compatible.
