Hash join

I have read everything that I can find on the hash join, and I still cannot figure out how it works. Is there anyone that is familiar enough with the hash join (or hash buckets and tables for that matter) that can point me towards a good source of explanation? I have already read Elizabeth Suto: Informix Performance Tuning, Carlton Doe: Informix Database Administration, Informix: 7.2 ODS Administrators Guide, and I am currently reading Joe Lumbley: Informix DBA Survival Guide.
