Problems with date fields

We have had problems with this off & on for several years and have worked around it, but one of our customers wants something better for his people. That something better is the capability to empty a date field on a .per screen after a date has been input. This data was transfered over from the old "vanilla" informix running on an intel 310 to our 4.10 SE Informix on an AT&T 3B2. They were able to put 00/00/00 in the date under the old informix. Now if they make a mistake after they enter a date and update the record, they are stuck. They have to delete the record and re-enter it so that there is nothing in the date field. How can this be remedied? We need the fields to be date, if possible. The functional users do their own programming with the .per's and as long as the solutions are simple, they can continue to do so. Could the date be made null again? Thanks in advance for any info.
