Unix groups and informix roles are completely different. You could have the same names for the Unix groups and Informix roles, but you cannot inherit the Unix level privileges for that user_id and group into Informix in any way. Now, once you add an user to a group, that user will not automatically inherit the role level priveleges until he runs the SET ROLE statement. By default all users get the role PUBLIC. After you run the set role, the role's priveleges are active for the rest of the session.
