I suspect that means that DB-Access is setting your terminal to display
7-bit characters only. However, it is hard to prove this -- you probably
need to run the DB-Access program in a window with a known tty device name
(/dev/pts/9 for sake of discussion), and then, in some other window,
analyze the tty settings on the DB-Access window with the command:
stty -a < /dev/pts/9
If you're using an older BSD-based machine, you may have to redirect stdout
instead of stdin to /dev/pts/9, and the answer will presumably appear on
stderr.
I ran into problems on Solaris 2.5.1 where it would not show the diacriticals
as anything other than the escaped octal characters.

You can definitely do that if the characters are part of the value of a
host variable. You may not get away with it if you use statements with the
diacriticals in the statement text.
