DAL (Data Access Language) is a solution you may want to consider. WARNING: I'm plugging my own product here :-). In a nutshell, DAL provides uniform client/server access to several major DBMSs including INFORMIX ONLINE and will allow you to import data into your client app with a few clicks of your mouse. Here at Pacer we engineer and market the server side for Unix platforms as well as resell the client piece.
Independence Technologies, Inc. engineers and markets DAL clients. They are presently developing a DAL driver for ODBC which should be released shortly. I'm pretty sure EXCEL is ODBC aware. You may want to consult with Independence Technologies over whether or not their ODBC DAL driver works with INFORMIX ONLINE and when it will be released. Independence Technologies can be reached at 1-800-605-9010.
Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.

Mike
