Hi all Thanks for your help. In the end it was an ftp conversion problem. I'd ftp'd the maks from aix to linux via windoze. The ftp prog had kindly inserted an invisible (to vi) &H0D after EOL (&H0A). I'd told it to use binary transfer ..... Hmm; Windoze would require binary FTP transfers in both stages to avoid putting control-M (which is what I take your &H0D notation to mean). Alternatively, using text transfer also works -- downloading to Windows would insert the control-M and uploading from Windows would remove the control-M's, unless one of the FTP programs was bust. Given the trouble, I'd suspect that one transfer (probably to Windows) was done in text mode and the other in binary. > JonB <fosterson900@netcomuk.co.uk> wrote in message > news:37eb7e73.2398375@nntp.netcomuk.co.uk... > > I am trying to port a large in-house applications suite from > > Aix 4.3 to Linux RH6.
