Re: HP-UX 10.10/INF 7.13 problem

Joe,
Is the UNIX node using DNS, or is it using it's local /etc/hosts file?
(If there is an /etc/resolv.conf file then the UNIX node is using DNS)
You said that the "PC can ping server by name and server can ping PC by name",
but that may be only half of the battle. I do not have access to a HP-UX
K-410 to test this, but if DNS is involved you should be able to check both
name_to_address, AND address_to_name translations using nslookup on the UNIX
node. It is critical that the DNS name server be able to translate both a
domain name to an address as well as an address to a domain name.
I have seen PCs connect to the sqlexec (or turbo) service on a UNIX
box (by name), but then the UNIX box fails to translate the PC's tcp-ip
address back into a node name, and the whole connection fails.
If the tcp-ip software was upgraged, the /etc/resolv.conf file might have
been lost or damaged. This would force the UNIX node to check its /etc/hosts
file for names and addresses (and the names and tcpip addresses for the PCs
might not be there if DNS was being used befor the upgrade).

} Folks,
}
} A client has a problem that baffles both me and INFORMIX Support. Maybe
} someone else has seen it.
}
} HP-UX K-410 on 10.10 HPUX
} Online 7.13.UC1
} INet 5.01WF1 on Win 95 (16 bit applications)
}
} System has worked fine for months. Customer last night applied a lot of HP-UX
} patches and relinked the kernel (patches for various things, including network).
} Now, customer cannot connect from any PC. Checked all obvious things (sqlhosts,
} /etc/services, setnet)....nothing has changed and everything should work.
}
} onstat -g ath shows a listener on the port. Sniffer shows that packets are
} going to the server from the PC. PC can ping server by name and server can ping
} PC by name. Multiple PC's have the same problem, get a -908 (network error)
} in ilogin.
}
} No server aliases and no shared memory net connection, just TCP/IP. dbaccess
} works fine....it's using a tcp/ip (onsoctcp) connection. Also, an older
} application using the relay module to connect from another client works fine.
}
} See several -408 errors in informix.log, but nothing consistent. No other
} errors. Multiple reboots of both server and client machines. Multiple
} restarts of Informix did not fix problem.
}
} It looks like Informix is fine, but it still doesn't work. My thinking is
} that it's a HP problem (some of their *inet* libraries have been replaced in
} the upgrade. Netstat -an | grep 1526 shows a listener on the port of the
} server.
}
} Anybody seen this?
}
} Also, client wants to upgrade to HP-UX 10.20. Should I be quaking in my
} boots?
}
} Thankx
