The performance difference is no longer very large. As you are apperantly used to Unix it is very likely that you will be disapointed with NT in several ways. Generally Unix is a much better designed environement for a database server. Both will run, and Informix will run better than others on both platforms. You will have to evaluate for yourself what platform you like best. One real point is stability though. We have been runing on Unix on PC's for a very long time and had all kinds of missuse of our servers (including power loss in the middle of the day) with no need ever to restor from a backup. My experience so far with NT makes me doubt that it would stand up as well. > Could I port my 4gl, reports, etc .. to NT ? It may be possible. There are some suppliers of 4GL look alike compilers that say they run on NT. Remember however they have been runing the end user interface on Windows for quite some time. It's much newer for them to actually run the server on NT. You also have to remember that any 4GL based solution retains the language and there is simply no way to make your input statement or other parts of you program event driven in and of itself. All solutions means adding something on top of your program. You may get a reasonable stop gap solution in this way, but for the long term I wouldn't base my shop on this. The day these vendors come out with solutions that include major extentions to the language so you can create event driven applications and run on the client as well as on the server the situation may change a little. However you would still have some major rewrites to do (much like with NewEra although it might be possible to do it simpler). In that case another more major tool in the market would still be something I would look seriously into. >Does any one have any thoughts. > >Post here or e-mail me. >ljohnson@erols.com > >Thanks > > Nils Myklebust NM Data AS Norway E-mail: Nils.Myklebust@nmdata.com FAQ at: Primary with ODBC info: http://www.smooth1.demon.co.uk Official site http://www.iiug.org/techinfo/faq/faq_top.html
