Re: IDS 10 Download?

Clustering offsets the need for 28-CPUs for most customers, and allows commodity hardware choices instead of proprietary solutions--including IBM. The market that actually needs 28-CPUs are now returning to the mainframe. And our friends at IBM are loving it. x86 gets very pricey when you go beyond a 4-CPU machine. But consider the AMD Opteron and you can get very fast for very cheap if you cluster. Even Dell is headed for AMD, and who knows may get Power before too long. Apple is doing pretty nice with the Power chip, it screams compared to an x86 system. IBM even offers the Opteron at a very affordable price, and clustering with it can be very cost effective. The new Power series from IBM has put them in the lead again with micro partitioning the Power5 into a mini-mainframe for about the same price as a conventional 4-CPU x86 box--a big market. Sun can't even come close in performance per CPU. They have had to practically give away everything just to keep themselves in the game. It's also important to consider that because of the rapid pace of change in the computer hardware market not to box yourself in by buying or leasing something that may end up being a boat anchor in six months to a year. Better to buy cheap, commodity hardware, and get the OS for next to nothing, and then if possible get the apps the same way, paying mostly for the professional services. Sun knows IBM is heading this direction and doesn't really have much to offer compared to IBM's Power chip. IBM is probably 5 years ahead of Sun or HP on hardware now. IBM is back in the driver's seat not only on hardware but also on the OS and software.
