RE: "IDS 10.0 Cities Tour 2006"
Posted in 2006
Not a technical support thread: it's a discussion (with some nationalistic bickering) about where IBM's "IDS 10.0 Cities Tour 2006" should stop. Posters argue the tour shouldn't be US-centric, suggest the IIUG lobby IBM to visit places where Informix is actually used, and note the practical limits on a US-based presenter's travel. Various wish lists follow (UK, Germany, Africa, India, Asia, Australia, NZ, South America), plus a side note about an NZ geospatial IDS site. No decision or outcome is recorded.

Once more we descend into the area of nationalistic feelings. And why - bacause some jerk took offence at the accusation that the US definition of worldwide was less than accurate. If we keep falling into that trap we will never achieve anything in this group. Speaking as one of the elder statesmen of cdi and IIUG I think we should welcome the concept of the IDS 10.0 Cities Tour 2006 and suggest that the IIUG make strong representations to IBM to ensure that the places visited are representative of the places where IDS is currently used, or where there are good reasons to believe that such a presentation will advance the cause of making Informix more widely known. Personally I would like to see Mark finally make it to doing a presentation in England. He was "billed" for an InfoBahn - but missed out. Then he was billed for UK User Group - and again we missed out. So how about the UK? That said we must all consider the undoubted requirement to consider the fact that Mark is from the US. His home is there and he is entitled to a home life. These sessions that he conducts often last just a few hours. For many places in the US he can get there and back in one long day, or with at most 1 night away from home. If he comes to Europe, Africa, Asia, or South America he is having to spend much longer away from home. So, if he is going to make it to your favourite city then please make sure you leave no stone unturned in your efforts to be there. Ignoreing all the crap here I'd suggest 1. London England 2. Germany 3. Greece (or Turkey) 4,5,6. Down to a few places in Africa 5. Saudi Arabia 6. India 7. Taiwan (see I do read the IIUG site - new usergroup here!) 8. Indonesia 9,10,11Down to a few places in Australia 12,13 South America. HOME! Back to US. And fit in Malta (big new win there) and benelux whereever they are. (Help me out here folks). i.e. touch down every few countries and so many people can reach at least one event and each journey is not too long. Perhaps support local usergroups (Malta/Benelux need support)?? David.

I have a simmilar list but in a different order. I suggest: India. Malasyia. China. Taiwan. Korea. Indonesia. Australia. New Zealand. Then where ever you like. My reasoning is: IMB needs (in my unsubstantiated opinion) to bolster the presense of Informix in the Asian market place. I see Asia as the region most likely to provide the DBA's and developers of the future (is a very general sense) and this needs to strongly support these markets with people as competent as Mark. Aussie is close to asia and an important Informix market. (I understand that HP do their Informix compatibility development work over there.) And New Zealand... Well it is just the darn best place in all the world. That being so, NZ was a leader in the Informix geo-spatial space, in the last millennium. Now we need all the encouragement that Mark can bring to our Informix development community, help retain our clients (and the knowledge base) and help us reverse falling down the MS plug hole. But hey. Don't you know. Kiwi's can fly anyway. David

They are a big (for NZ) IDS site in that space. If you are genuinely interested I will dig it out but the story probably doesn't even come close to the clever things that the huge Comcast does. Cheers from the still green and warm and sunny Aotearoa. David
