Database partitioning (ala DB2 + DPF or XPS) is no substitute for table partitioning (ala Oracle or IDS (and XPS?) is no substitute for wide-rowids. Partitioning can be used to overcome the rowid limitation, but it's not a replacement and as such does not void the need for both IDS and DB2 to step up. This is well understood by DB2 development and, as Madison suggestsm IDS development. There are a couple of interesting problems to solve when going from 4 to 6 (or more) bytes: Less rowids per index leaf. This has impact on index depth and hence performance. Unacceptable from a customer point of view. So it's not as easy as changing a couple of typedefs or #define. From an IBMers point of view this thread is turning into a "friendly fire" incident. ;-) Cheers Serge -- Serge Rielau DB2 SQL Compiler Development IBM Toronto Lab
