Use a separate INFORMIXDIR for each version of OnLine. In general, it is
easiest if you use the version number as part of the directory name.
Consider making /usr/informix into a symbolic link to the default version,
the one which users should use in the absence of a specific need to use the
latest or oldest version, or whatever. Install the relevant versions of
the Tools and Connectivity products in the same directories. Each
INFORMIXDIR should be able to work in isolation.

The 4.1x version of the product should be installed with the 5.0x server.
You could use 4.1x I4GL with the 6.0x and 7.x servers provided you set the
SQLEXEC environment variable to sqlrm, but your performance will suffer;
you should be using 6.0x I4GL with both the 6.0x and 7.x servers.

This is a connectivity product and should be co-located with the server
products for its version. You could consider installing it once in each
server INFORMIXDIR but I don't know whether that would work.

Obviously, you need to set INFORMIXDIR, INFORMIXSERVER, SQLEXEC and PATH
appropriately for the Engine version you are trying to use. You probably
need to set TBCONFIG correctly to use the 5.0x version. I think that you
only need to set ONCONFIG correctly when doing server initialization
(oninit) or maintenance (onmonitor, onmode, oncheck, etc) with the 6.0x and
7.x servers. This may depend on the connectivity method -- olipcshm may
need ONCONFIG set; using oltlitpc does not require it. Other environment
variables may need to be set correctly too, but most of them do not matter.
You also need to ensure that the server names and numbers and service names
are unique between the various versions. Any overlap will lead to
confusion. This affects /etc/services (or the NIS maps thereof), and
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts. Note that in 6.0x and 7.x, you can set
INFORMIXSQLHOSTS to point to an absolute pathname of the sqlhosts file;
this does allow a central copy to be used for the 6.0x and 7.x servers.
And if it points to the 5.0x version (which must be the 5.0x file
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts), then you can use the same sqlhosts file for all
versions. Symbolic links can help here too. Also decide how you are going
to track which disk space is allocated to each server, both within a single
version and across versions.
At peak, I've had two 4.12, one 5.03 and two 6.00 OnLine systems running on
a single machine...
