alter table add column: error -458

Hello, We are working with an Informix OnLine Server. When we try to add a column to an existing table we always got the errormsg: 458: Long transaction aborted. The table contains only ~8000 records so we are wondering what is happening. We have already increased the size of physical and logical log with no effect. Currently LOGSIZE is set to 5000 and the number of logical logs is 6. Does Informix copies the entire table on an ALTER TABLE statement, so that huge log sizes are required ?
