Informix runtime version vs. development version

Can anyone explain the specific differences between a runtime version of Informix 7.2.4 and a development version? Is the development version more of a resource hog than the runtime version? We are running Informix 7.2.4 on a Pyramid ES (ancient I know) with a development version and system resources are greatly consumed with no one logged into the database. Thanks in advance!
