dbschema
Posted in 2012
A DBA on IDS 11.50.FC5/AIX 5.3 found that dbschema on a PeopleSoft database with ~96K tables/views ran for hours, exited without error, but produced an incomplete (~200MB) schema; ulimit was already unlimited. Suggestions were to open a PMR and to try Art Kagel's myschema (in utils2_ak from the IIUG Software Repository), which also lets you set or strip the object owner (--owner=name / -O). Use "dbschema -s -d db" (no -s needed for myschema) to get all object types. The poster reported myschema completed the full PeopleSoft schema much faster than dbschema, so it worked.

I have a People Soft database that has 96K tables/views. I'm trying to do
a dbschema of the entire thing. dbschema runs for several hours and then
finishes without an error, but the dbschema output is not the entire
database. Is there some limit on the size of the output file with
dbschema or something else that might be causing this. I'm needing this
because we rebuild the entire database in a development instance with
other databases and also different owners. I have an old BMC ischema
utility that I was using, but it keeps getting a memory fault, probably a
similar issue .. Thanks for any help ...

I'd have to search but you'd be better served by opening a PMR.
I recall having worked with a Baan installation with around 130K tables...
But of course it would depend on the number of columns, names etc.
Nevertheless if I recall correctly the schema had around 30MB or so...
meaning I doubt it's a file size problem. Have you tried to increase your
ulimits?
What's the file size you get?
Regards.

Try Art Kagels mydbschema from utils2_ak.

Get my dbschema replacement utility, myschema. In addition to possibly not
choking on the volume of tables, myschema has a feature that will let you
specify what owner you want the output schema to display for each table
(--owner=name) or you can eliminate the owner entirely (-O). Get the
utils2_ak package from the IIUG Software Repository.

On large databases with many tables, sometimes dbschema is faster sometimes
myschema is. It is probably due to the different SQL that the dbschema
designers and I used for the different parts of the process. I just picked
up a new client who uses BAAN, but we have not installed my utilities there
yet, so I can't tell how well of poorly myschema runs there at this point.
However, I have other clients with massive numbers of tables and other
objects. One client had over a million systabauth records (*had* because
we migrated them to ROLEs finally) resulting in a schema file with over a
million lines and myschema worked just fine.

Art,
What options do I use to get all objects .. ie. tables ... views ...
indexes ... synonyms ... procedures ... triggers ... primary keys ... I'm
not getting them all ... looks like I got tables, indexes, triggers, and
procedures ... what I want to do is take my complete production database,
and put it on my development server with a different owner. We already
have scripts to load up the tables. I was using the ischema utility from
BMC .. that is breaking now .. Thanks ..

For dbschema:
dbschema -s -d database
For myschema leave off the -s because myschema always prints the extended
system dependent details.
Both should print out all tables, synonyms, views, user defined types,
sequences, triggers, procedures, functions, grants, roles, indexes,
constraints, etc.

up a new client who uses BAAN, but we have not installed my utilities
there
yet, so I can't tell how well of poorly myschema runs there at this point.
However, I have other clients with massive numbers of tables and other
objects. One client had over a million systabauth records (*had* because
we migrated them to ROLEs finally) resulting in a schema file with over a
million lines and myschema worked just fine.

Art,
2.5M - tables
2.1M - Remaining
That's what I got on my PS database with your utility ... Worked a lot
faster than dbschema ...
For future improvements ... have you ever considered breaking the index
sql into several files so they can run concurrently on the rebuild ..
without having to edit the output file .. just a thought .. The old BMC
tool which I had split each of the different objects into there own files
.. ie. tables in one .. indexes in another .. procedures .. etc. So it
was easy to break up the indexes for concurrency ...

On large databases with many tables, sometimes dbschema is faster
sometimes
myschema is. It is probably due to the different SQL that the dbschema
designers and I used for the different parts of the process. I just picked
up a new client who uses BAAN, but we have not installed my utilities
there
yet, so I can't tell how well of poorly myschema runs there at this point.
However, I have other clients with massive numbers of tables and other

Not sure what your #s are saying. Does that mean that myschema output
400,000 tables out of 2,500,000 tables?
I actually have an AWK script to post process the schema output and break
up the indexes into separate files by table. Not hard to write so there's
not much internal pressure to make it an enhancement to myschema. It
wouldn't be hard. Just close the current output file and open a new one
when a new table starts. That would put each table and its indexes and
triggers into separate files. Then it could switch to the common file for
everything else: functions, procedures, UDTs, and constraints that are
normally ganged at the beginning and end of the schema file.
