Sorry, I'm not familiar. I've just thought it is something similar to SCO UnixWare 7 slicing (it allows max 184 slices on a partition). Neil, what is the disk-slicing tool on Solaris - it is edvtoc or an interactive administration tool ? It could be the limitation of this administration tool. May be just using edvtoc the partition may be sliced up in more than 8 slices ? I think just running man vtoc on the Solaris host would clarify this issue. Though, I think the volume manager (if there is one) can handle this.
