Onstat -D / onstat -u mismatch

IDS 9.21.UC6, Solaris 2.8 building an ETX index, into logged smartdbs, onstat -u shows the nreads column ticking up. The nwrites is remaining at zero. Onstat -D shows heavy reads on one smartdbs where the data is, and heavy writes on smartdbs where the index is heading. onstat -z was issued before the monitoring started and there is onlyone session connected, the index build. Why isn't nwrites changing? Sounds like a buglet?
