Ontape -c behaving like ontape -a and no checkpoints !
Posted in 1998
It seems as if ontape -c has started running line ontape -a, i.e. when a new
tape is loaded and ontape -c started only the logs that were full are backed
up and logs that fill after that time just sit there. Perhaps more worrying
is that we have had very few checkpoints, all of which are zero seconds !
this is NOT normal behaviour.
Our live system has been running happily and error free for months, level 0
overnight to DLT, logs continuously to tape during the day to another DLT,
checkpoints of 1 to 2 seconds every 10 to 15 minutes depending on user
activity (about 150 users) it was all fine until yesterday...
As far as I'm aware nothing changed with the system yesterday, we had a h/w
tape error reported at 7am but the logs backed up OK after that until 11am
when it froze. Stopping & restarting ontape doesn't solve the problem.
Backing up logs to another device (DAT) does not fix the problem.
What about the checkpoints ? Our users report normal system performance and
have done a regular days work.
