ONTAPE: space used status?

When running `ontape -c` to back up the logical logs continuously, where does Online keep track of how much data has been written to tape? I assume it keeps track of this somewhere and at some point compares this value to the size of LTAPEDEV to see if it has written the max amount that the tape device can hold. I'd like to be able to get an idea of how much space is left on the tape at any point in time.
