Server won't start....possibly changed parameter
Posted in 2017
Larry reported that on Solaris 10 SPARC his IDS server hung during oninit -v right after "Checking config parameters...succeeded" (never reaching the shared-memory allocation step), with online.log only showing the Workgroup Edition warning that shared memory had been capped at 16 GB; no segments or semaphores appeared in ipcs. Suggestions included: buffers/SHMVIRTSIZE too large to fit under SHMTOTAL or the licence cap (the licence warning can mask a real SHMTOTAL overrun), setting INFORMIXSERVER to a shared-memory sqlhosts entry, and diagnosing with truss or pstack on the hung oninit processes (onstat would not work with no shared memory). No resolution is recorded in the thread.

I am not sure if someone made a change somewhere, but when I try to restart a
database it just hangs with no special messages. I need help figuring it out.

Then it hangs.
The online.log...
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Started
Warning: The IBM IDS Workgroup Edition license restriction limits the total
shared memory size for this server to 16777216 KB
The size has been reset to the limit to bring up the database server.
Everything is hung at this point and `ipcs` shows no memory nor semiphores
have been created for the database.
Any suggestions on where I go from here to figure out why it is hanging and
not starting?

can you do onstat -g stk all ???

Is it possible that your buffer caches are so large that when the engine
reduced virtual memory to fit under 16GB there isn't enough memory to start
up?

It's a long shot, but if you have your INFORMIXSERVER environment variable
set to a TCP connection when you start up the engine, then set it to a
shared memory value (if you have one configured in the sqlhosts) and try
again.

Response:
So from the oninit -v you included, the next line on a successful startup I
believe should be this:
Reading configuration file
'/vobs/tristarm/sqldist/etc/onconfig.pmr29264'...succeeded
Creating /INFORMIXTMP/.infxdirs...succeeded
Checking config parameters...succeeded
Allocating and attaching to shared memory...succeeded
So if you aren't seeing the "allocation and attaching to..." message it would
seem that the server is trying to do that part. As root you could try and to a
truss -f -o outfile oninit -v and check the output file to see if the server
is stuck in some OS library call. Alternatively when the oninit command hangs
you could get the pid's of any oninit processes and try and us /bin/pstack to
see what stack traces are reported for the oninits to try and get an idea of
what they are doing. Don't think you would be able to run any onstat's yet if
the shared memory segments haven't been created.

I've gotten the erroneous (at least in my case) -->
"Warning: The IBM IDS Workgroup Edition license restriction limits the
total shared memory size for this server to 16777216 KB"
when the problem is actually SHMTOTAL has been exceeded by SHMVIRTSIZE plus
buffer total MEM.
The actual error does appear in the online.log, just not on (in) the
console.
So the change (increase) in buffer size is still the likely culprit, even
though it has nothing to do with
licensing and such ...
