ids on Windows and cpu usage

Hello,
When using IDS on Windows (2003) I notice not all the CPU gets used when
informix is performing it's tasks.
Say the hardware is an Intel XEON (core duo), the cpu status shows 50% in use
for oninit process when the database is busy. If the server has two XEON dual
core processors it shows 25% use and same for Quad Core.
How can I make IDS use more of the CPU available?
Thanks in advance, Carl Meyer.
Can you provide more information, such as number of CPU VPs you have
configured, PDQ settings, IDS version etc.

IDS version 9.4 tc2 (Windows)
Current Onconfig parameters that relate to these settings:
MULTIPROCESSOR 1#NUMCPUVPS 4
SINGLE_CPU_VP 0
#NOAGE 0
#AFF_SPROC 2
#AFF_NPROCS 8
#NUMAIOVPS
VPCLASS cpu,num=3
Note sure what a PDQ is. Let me know more detail and I will forward.
Cheers, Carl.
First note that unlike some other RDBMSes IDS isn't much of a CPU hog. That
said there are ways to tune IDS to balance the CPU load better. If you are
using shared memory connections for local clients (ie on the same box)
extensively, then set:
NETTYPE ipcshm,<N>,<M>,CPU
Where <N> is the number of CPU VPs, <M> is the number of connections you want
to allow per CPU VP (N*M is the maximum total shared memory connections
permitted).
You should be configuring at least one and perhaps up to 3 CPU VPs per physical
CPU core (rule of thumb - a core can handle 1 CPU VP per 500MHZ of processor
speed - 1/750MHZ for Intel processors).
If you are using COOKED (ie filesystem files) chunks you should configure
NUMAIOVPS to 1-1.25 times the number of COOKED chunks. Set to 6 if you are
using only RAW chunks.
I don't know if the NOAGE and AFF_ parameters work or are a performance
requirement under windows, but they generally help if implemented - check the
release notes.
If your clients are performing complex queries and especially if you have
fragmented some of your tables, setting PDQPRIORITY > 1 will enable the engine
to use multiple internal threads per session improving query performance and
utilizing more CPU resources per query to complete them faster.
Bottom line: what's performance like? If the users are happy, likely you're
not using much resources because IDS is satisfying the existing requests with
the few resources it is taking. Don't complain. You could be using another
RDBMS which would grab 95% of every CPU and still run slower.

The performance gate I typically see on Windows is a disk bottleneck. CPU
tends not to be an issue.
