Restore SAP system on another machine
Posted in 2003
A user running SAP on IDS 7.3 asked how to copy/restore the whole system onto new hardware, specifically what's needed on the SAP side. Respondents gave general guidance rather than a definitive recipe: use ON-Bar with the same disk layout, copy/adjust the storage-manager and Informix config files (sm_versions, onconfig, sqlhosts), recreate the same users/groups and UIDs, copy the SAP directories (/sapmnt/SID, /informix/SID, /usr/sap/trans, /etc/services), run saproot.sh, then restore. Others pointed to SAP OSS note 173970 for a homogeneous system copy, suggested EMC BCV refreshes, and recommended the IIUG 'sapmix' list. No confirmation of the outcome is recorded.

We are running a SAP application on IDS 7.3. I want to restore the system on another machine. Can anyone tell me what steps I need to follow from a SAP point of view. This is the first time that I am doing this. Any tips/help will be welcome. Thanks

ok,
now it depends with Storage Manager you use,
I think its describe in the onbar manual somewhere.
( im sorry i havent this manual at home )
of course you must have the same disk layout on the new machine
as the old one ( raw devices, links and so on )
we have sap on Informix 9.30 FCxx with TSM , and there its very easy
the only things to do is to change the nodename ( be aware to have the same
nodename at one time ) and copy and change ( hostname , ip adress .... )
some files to the new machine ( sm_versions, onconfig, sqlhosts and the
onbar files as describe in the manual )
and then do the restore

Hi,
sorry for the disaccord
is this a new sap instance or a copy to new hardware ?
the best thing you can do is take a look at the sap notes in the
marketplace ( system copy informix or so )
hth

Hi,
I would rather suggest to get SAP documentation . You didn't metioned what
kind of system copy you intend to do e.g. homogenous or heterogenous.
Start with OSS Note 173970 for homogenous system copy.
Anyway I advise you to register into sapmix forum on IIUG where you can get
some more usefull tips from SAP/Informix users and support looks always
into it.
Regards,
Janusz.

If you are using EMC disk and trying to create a Test or "sandbox" system, you can use BCV's and do a refresh. The procedure isn't easy; taken us a few times to perfect it, but in the SAP world it ends up being the best way to have a full copy of your production machine. Also, are you aware of the "sapmix" newsgroup here? It's dedicated to Informix issues in the SAP environment. You can sign up for it in your IIUG profile.
