Re: oninit -i: passwd problem and error in buildin
Posted in 2006
Frank copied the whole /usr/informix directory to another AIX box and ran 'oninit -iv'; the startup appeared to succeed but the online log showed several warnings (non-resident shared memory segment, insecure DUMPDIR /tmp, SHMBASE relocation, missing DBSPACETEMP dbspaces) and then repeated '-951: Incorrect password or user informix@otto is not known' errors, ending with 'Error building sysmaster database'. Art Kagel said the warnings are informational and that -951 points to the informix account lacking a valid login/password entry or trust; Martin suggested the copy lost file ownership/permissions on the binaries and recommended re-copying with tar as root with matching UIDs/GIDs. Frank replied informix was in /etc/passwd, and no confirmed resolution is recorded in the thread.

hi,
we wrapped up the directory /usr/informix/ where informix was installed
and unwrapped it at another machine.
When we run oninit -iv, it gave the following info.

Hi,
either the problem is what Art Kagel describes below,
or it is that during your "wrap - unwrap" procedure some
of the binaries lost some of their specific file access rights.
Actually I guess it is the latter.
I don't know what you did when you say "wrap - unwrap",
I'm not aware of the existance of such commands.
You can try to use "tar" instead. And with "tar" you have to
do it as user root (both, "tar cvf ... " and "tar xvf ...") to
preserve owner, group and access rights of the files.
Precondition for this to work is that the numerical user IDs of
users ("root" and "informix") and group ID of "informix"
should be the same on both machines respectively.
Regards,
Martin

The messages about user 'informix' were in the log long after the oninit
statup.
Looks like someone (you?) tried to connect to the instance as 'informix' but
there was no valid password entry in /etc/passwd. That's what error code -951
indicates (see 'finderr -951').

Art,
The informix entry is in /etc/passwd file.
There is no other user wanted to connected to db.
I am the only user Informix to do the oninit -i there.
Looks IDS wants to build sysmaster db but it could not go through passwd
verification somehow.

What are your permissions for the oninit task? Should be:
-rwsr-sr-- 1 root informix 17013152 Mar 29 2006 oninit
As someone pointed out that may be a problem depending on how you 'moved' the
directory tree from the original machine.

Hello,
Both password, os level and in database must match.
