Help with Informix mirror problem??
Posted in 1995
I am running Online 5.01 on an HP9000/735 with HPUX 9.01.
I have two dbspaces, rootdbs and dbspace1, mirrored using Informix
mirroring. I am using a RAID in independent mode, four mechs as two
primary chunks and two mirror chunks. Like this:
rootdbs devices chunk1 and mirror1, each one RAID mech.
dbspace1 devices chunk2 and mirror2, each one RAID mech.
The computer crashed while I was on vacation, a hard crash. We had
corrupt data on the root filesystem. The Unix sysadmins thought one of
the RAID mechs (chunk2) was bad, so they replaced it. Actually the problem
was the root disk, a F/W SCSI disk. Eventually they got it going and
data restored where necessary to the filesystems.
This is a development system, so my cohorts decided to leave Online
offline until I got back (thanks!).
I got back, brought Online up. It knew about the tables in dbspace1,
since it could read the system tables fine, but was not able to read data
from dbspace1, and gave me the following error:
SYSTEM error number -135.
ISAM error: tblspace does not exist
I tried marking chunk2 down, and then recovering it. No go.
I tried dropping dbspace1, and it wouldn't let me ("bad isam file
format").
I found my friendly Unix sysadmin and he rummaged around until he found
the original mech, put it back in the RAID, and all was well.
Before turning on Informix mirroring, we tested this scenario
thoroughly (we thought). Marked chunks down, recovered them, turned off
mechs, on, etc etc, with no problems.
Needless to say, this has made me very nervous. What if a production RAID
mech fails and Online won't read from the mirror? WHY wouldn't it read
from the mirror in this case? Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
