HPL and lock overflows

I have been using the HPL to load large tables (1.5 million rows,) HPL uses up all the locks (NLOCKS 400000). Why would this happen given that HPL sets an exclusive lock on the table when using the express mode ? Steve. NB. I can get around this by loading the table in pieces or using the deluxe mode, but I would still like to know why express mode chews up locks , anyone ?
