File Allocation Table Overflow

I have run across an interesting error. I am using AT&T UNIX sysv3.2.2 INFORMIX SE 5.0 I have a data base with 300+ tables. I have several applications that access the database through a ($database DBNAME) type command in ESQLC code. The error: After the forth user starts up an application I get a "file allocation table overflow" The system administrator is concerned that: 1)When the application opens a database (sqlexec starts) that every file and its index is "opened" by the operating system. That is over 600 files open. 2)That each time the application is started by another user the files are opened again. Thats over 1200 files open. 3)That when we add to the database another 400 tables every thing will break. 4)The only solution is to switch to Online. Could these concerns really be true?
