The default location for logical logs and the physical log are in the
rootdbs. It is recommended to move these out of the rootdbs, and set
up separate dbspaces to contain these logs.
One of the most stupid things Informix installations do is also set
up the DBSPACETEMP to point to rootdbs, on the NT versions. This is
a great way to make Informix Engines look bad automatically without
the intervention of a salesman. :-) I've mentioned this to Erin
Kinikin of Informix, but she's probably ignored it. Newbies don't
know enough when they get their hands on the NT version, and the
system behaves badly, and thus Informix looks bad, and gives them
a black eye needlessly. I see this pop up time and time again when
developers decide to install Informix and don't know what settings
to tune. What would be good is to finish the installation with
some better default settings, such as a logsdbs, physdbs, and
tempdbs1 and tempdbs2. This is not difficult, and should be a part
of the default installation.
To answer your question directly:
Instructions are found in the Administrator's Guides. In a nutshell,
look-up information on onmode, onspaces, onparams. Many will
recommend Onmonitor, but this tool is not always available. :-)
I prefer the command-line tools anyway. Someday, if Informix stays
in business, they should have an Onmonitor written in a GUI format.
If you go command-line you will need to set the engine to Adminstrative
mode for this operation, using the onmode command. You can use onspaces
to create the new dbspaces where the new logs will reside. You then
use onparams to drop the logical logs out of the rootdbs and create new
ones in the new dbspace. The onparams command is also what you would
use to roll the physical log out of the rootdbs into the new dbspace
for your physical log.
I have a short article in this month's InxUtil magazine which touches
briefly on this topic, from an NT perspective, which is one of the
main reasons I don't use Onmonitor. If you do a lot of installations
I recommend setting up Perl and automating the process. Head over to
www.inxutil.com and look for the December Issue.
