Are you sure it is SE and not Dynamic Server (previously OnLine). These are two different database engines. SE (Standard Engine) is created for smaller databases with not too many users. It keeps each database in a Unix directory and each table in a unix file in that same or a different directory. Although I have heard of many people stretching the ability of the SE engine beyond what it was designed for, what you describe does sound a little too much for it. Of course it does depend on what those users and batch programs do. In some very special settings it might run fine. Otherwise it's common to use the Dynamic Server engine for this size application. You don't say anything about the size of the database (number of rows in tables, number of tables, how they are accessed+++) nor what your users are doing. Some more information would be helpfull. What kind of application is it? SE 6.x is also an old engine. The latest version is 7.something. Although I don't know about any problems with the SE engine in the 6.x version (I doubt there where many) it's allways a good idea to go with a later version (not necessarily the latest). The latest on Dynamic Server is 7.30 wich is very new and available only on a few major platforms. The previous version is 7.24 available on many platforms. You don't say anything about the application and it's compatibility with Informix. Is it inhouse developed? In that case you have to look into conversion and what problems may occur. If it's one you buy I assume the supplier have it available for use with Informix. If it's created for the SE engine you may get some problems running it on Dynamic Server if it is not well designed. You will have to talk to your vendor about that. The SE and Dynamic Server engines are very compatible from an application point of view, but the differences are enough you may get some suprices. The Dynamic Server engine is very good, easy to adminstrate and stable and would have no problem with any size application or number of users on the appropriate hardware.
