RE: IDS Version Detection.
Posted in 2006
A developer wanted a way to detect the full IDS version string (e.g. 7.31.xD9), ideally without running server tools. Replies suggested SQL: SELECT DBINFO('version','full') FROM systables WHERE tabid=1, plus the component options (server-type, major, minor, os, level), with sample output shown; also dbaccess run from a script file or 'dbaccess -v', and onstat -. Since the poster's Windows scanner can only read the registry and pull files, the accepted workaround was to read the version from the release notes files under $INFORMIXDIR\\release\\en_us\\0333. No registry-based method was identified.

Subject: IDS Version Detection.
I'm looking for the best way to do version detection for IDS. I'd like
to get the entire version (to the level of 7.31.xD9 for example). Best
would be some sort of external check (access of a port). Second best
would be through a registry check, then a file version check or text in
a file.
Any ideas?
Thank You

Best way I know how is to:
select DBINFO ('version', 'full') from systables where tabid = 1;
You can get to the individual parts via:
DBINFO ('version', 'server-type')
DBINFO ('version', 'major')
DBINFO ('version', 'minor')
DBINFO ('version', 'os')
DBINFO ('version', 'level')

)Can you give me an example of what full would give along with what each
of these five pieces would give on the same version of the DBMS?
This will work for unix/lunix where our product is able to ssh-login
when the user enters their username and password, but on the Microsoft
Windows side, our product is only able to query the registry and get
files.
I think that Informix does put some info to the registry for the
Windows side, but I'm not sure of all of the fields in the registry,

DBINFO ('version', 'full') Informix Dynamic Server 2000 Version9.21.HC2
DBINFO ('version', 'server-type') Informix Dynamic Server 2000
DBINFO ('version', 'major') 9
DBINFO ('version', 'minor') 21
DBINFO ('version', 'os') H
DBINFO ('version', 'level') C2

On windows as well, I am sure you can use dbaccess. Put required query
in a files, say version.sql and execute query within application as an
OS command (make sure to set env. variables) as:
dbaccess sysmaster version.sql > output.txt 2>&1
Hope output file may help you with version.
Another option:
within application, you may use:
onstat - > output.txt 2>&1

Unfortunately our product does not have the ability to execute Windows
programs using access to ports even with the user providing the Windows
userid and password. We can access the registry, look at dates of
change for various files and upload files from the system (which we can
analyze for the file version.)
So things that require running onstat or other informix executables
will not work on the Windows side for our product due to limitations on
access to Windows through the SSH port.
Your suggestions are certainly helpful on the UNIX/LINUX boxes.

If you can log in to a DOS prompt via SSH, then you can run Dbaccess, so long as
the necessary environment variables are set. If your Informix version is older,
the DBINFO function built in to SQL may not have the features others have
mentioned. However, you can simply enter "dbaccess -v" to get the version
number.

How about looking at a few release notes for the version of Informix? I
bet on a windows box the release notes are still in
"$INFORMIXDIR\\release\\en_us\\0333". With a little scripting you can make
it look nice. HTH.
