It was something that was poorly designed, poorly marketed, and poorly priced. :-) Unfortunately it was almost good enough to use. If it had been a try-buy like other sofware products maybe developers could have contributed ideas to make it better. But c'est la vie. > > (We are working with DataDirector, I hope Informix doesn't burn us again.) > > > > Shannon > I don't know if DataDirector will be as much a problem as NE was. But did you use a few simple test questions with this product? Is it portable? Is it mainstream? Does it scale? The VB version is at least an add-in to VB and not totally its own animal. At least it will integrate with VB as something mainstream for small apps. After looking at a presentation on VB at our user group meeting last night, I was impressed with DataDirector/VB as a great prototyping tool. It was pretty fast at getting an app up and running without coding. Scalable? Hmmmmm... That's were I think 4GL will make a comeback. > I will move to Brazil and raise parrots which come with their own back end and > graphic front end and not worry about what Informix is doing from that day on! > I like that analogy. :-) > Actually, I am hoping because Dynamic 4GL is really an invention of 4Js, NOT > Informix, and has been out there for a little bit, there is a better chance of > survival and support. Will see. > Yes, it comes from 4Js. The most interesting thing for me about D4GL is that it uses Tcl/Tk for the graphical presentation. I'm just now getting the box open and looking at the docs, and it looks most promising. As much as D4GL has great potential to revitalize 4GL, I am hoping standard 4GL will get ported to Linux very soon, just like D4GL is. Standard 4GL could be the perfect beginning of a tools strategy with Informix. An eventual migration path for developers new to Informix might take them from standard 4GL and/or ESQL/C to D4GL to DataDirector/VB. Each has a place, and could provide enough of a tools suite for serious development. In fact if anyone else is interested in Standard 4GL on Linux I'd love to hear from you. It would also be good to hear if anyone else is interested in IDS of any variation on Linux as well.
