I think Informix's position on the tbzero utility and the use thereof by the "end user" (ie, system/DB administrator) community is unreasonable. This weekend a disk crashed on a multi-gigabyte DSS system running Informix Online v5.02. Of course, the disk crashed while the latest backup was still running. I called Informix and they said that they could give me access to the chunk on that disk, but they would need to dialin to the server. That might be great for most people, but this server happens to contain sensitive government data which Informix personnel are by no means authorized to access. Informix was unwilling to provide the utility (presumably tbzero) to restore access to the affected chunk, and instead said that the only recourse was to restore from backup. Great...and since tbtape hadn't completed its backup before Online paniced, killed the backup, and downed the chunked, I don't have a 100% backup. Thanks for the help, Informix...glad to see you're earning the dollars paid for the maintenance contract. If anyone happens to have, or know where the PD-tbzero-type program is located, could you please let me know? I'd really appreciate it! Thanks for reading my rant, and for any useful info you might have! -Bill jaegerwl@wckn.dorm.clarkson.edu
