Re: DB2 vs IDS Getting the word out...
Posted in 2008
Not a technical troubleshooting thread: it's a discussion/opinion exchange about IBM's marketing of Informix (IDS) versus DB2. Participants argue that IBM invests in DB2 promotion (e.g. DB2 on Campus, roadshows) but does too little for IDS, debate how much IBM funds or influences the IIUG versus IDUG, and whether user groups and fan sites should carry IBM's grassroots marketing. A side note mentions informixmag.com being suspended for a week by its ISP for excessive resource use, now back online. No technical problem or resolution is recorded.

There is a big difference. I assume that IBM will also start a roadshow or some other form of business partner event as soon as they have a new release of DB2. I remember some 2 or 3 days free technical workshops here in Germany last year. The difference is that those roadshows and free technical workshops are in investment to increase sales now and here. The DB2 on Campus program is focused on universities and is an investment into the future. I want to see the same future investment from IBM for IDS ! > > And of course IBM owns the IIUG. > IBM doesn't deal or play well with IDUG. I don't think that IBM owns the IIUG. Stuart is definitely a person that can speak for his own as well as the rest of the IIUG board members. They do hard work to promote Informix and this will not work without of some help from IBM. I appreciate their dedication and effort to spread the word about IBM's dirty little secret.

I think that if you were to ask Stuart the right question, he'd tell you that IBM does "help" fund the IIUG. If you were to ask Stuart what would happen without IBM's funding, he'd probably tell you that they would have a hard go of it. Don't get me wrong. I too appreciate the IIUG, and this isn't a knock on the IIUG. The point is that IBM has ties with the IIUG and not so much with IDUG. Also IDUG isn't in the same league as the IIUG. IDUG is a for profit venture. The IIUG solely exists to line Stuart's pockets. :-P (ONLY KIDDING. That last comment was a poke at something someone said and humor at Stuart's expense.) Seriously the IIUG is a true user group community effort. IDUG isn't. IBM has a good relationship with IIUG and the IIUG is willing to act in part as IBM's mouthpiece. Unfortunately, IBM can't put the burden of marketing on the IIUG or fan sites like Erics and JGP. IBM has to put some skin in the game and do some of the heavy lifting. And IDS isn't IBM's dirty little sekret. Its the IT industry's dirty little sekret. Big difference. Try getting WallyMart or k-sears or crisco the networking company to actually admit and become a reference? Or the banks that use IDS? They don't because IDS is their competitive advantage. -G
Thanks 4 the pitch about jgp's we site... ;-) The to-be-remain-nameless db behind http://www.informixmag.com was, according to our ISP, consuming "too much resources". It took them one week to reactivate it. I apologize for the lack of services. So feel free to go back to http://www.informixmag.com at any time! > -----Original Message----- > From: informix-list-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:informix-list- > bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Ian Michael Gumby > Sent: Friday, August 29, 2008 22:24 > To: informix-list@iiug.org > Subject: Re: DB2 vs IDS Getting the word out... > > On Aug 29, 3:04 pm, e...@herber-consulting.de wrote: > > > I don't think that IBM owns the IIUG. You need content and that's not the easiest thing to come by. It important to understand that the IIUG can't be IBM's marketing site for IDS. The IIUG shouldn't *be* IBM's grassroot's marketing effort on its own. That's not to say that the IIUG shouldn't play a part of IDS's message, but that IBM should not off load that burden to the IIUG. The said truth of Eric's article is that IDS and even DB2 distributed isn't growing enough to keep pace with the market growth. Sure IDS is growing and beating their earlier numbers (so IBMers say) however, the market grew more. So this is like patting an A student on the back and rewarding him for getting a B even though he could have gotten an A. Ambush may support IDS because its making his pillar money, but his philosophy about the tools and marketing shows a lack of thought and focus on the future. Just the short term qtr to qtr results.
