Informix over network

Is it possible to access an Informix database over a network without running the Informix server on the local box? We have an Oracle application that queries a vendor's database, and we don't have Oracle server on our system. So far, I don't see that this is possible with Informix. You _do_ need to install the Informix client tools if you wish to use the Informix SQL editor, and other tools. But you can use ODBC or JDBC if you want and these don't require a database engine either. You could try our ODBC driver: SCO SQL-Retriever; we do drivers for Informix (v4,5,6 & 7 SE & OnLine) and Oracle (7) on several UNIX platforms: single vendor solution! No need for the RDBMS vendor's networking software (sqlnet or INet either). Take a look at http://www.sco.com/vision/products/sqlretriever/ for more information and a downloadable eval.
